AAMP 2024-2025 Opening Session

9/14/24

We kicked off a new year of our Alpha Academy Mentoring Program! In our opening session discussed a great deal of information with mentees and parents, to include a full recap of the 2023-2024 year, the 2024-2025 program schedule, along with numerous updates and changes we have made to the program. We will continue to meet at Annapolis Middle School on the second Saturday of eachmonth from 9am -1pm. This year we will be implementing targeted tutoring, mentoring, and mental health discussions during the last hour of each session. Our intent with respect to mental health, is to give mentees a safe environment to discuss issues they may be encountering and for us to assist them in navigating. We will also be incorporating the Leadership Development Institute (LDI) into our program. Our high school mentees will be receiving this training, which discusses topics such as conflict resolution, public speaking, community and civic engagement, and educational enhancement skills. Those who demonstrate the requisite knowledge, community and civic involvement, will be afforded the opportunity to attend our Eastern Regional Convention in April 2025 and engage will highly respected leaders from across the Eastern Region. The Pinewood Derby Project will continue to be a focus with our middle school students, culminating with Race Day at the end of the academic year. In addition to our monthly sessions, mentees will also participate in events such as College Fairs, Young Men’s Conference, Community Service Initiative, Black History Tour, and others events that will be scheduled throughout the year. Our program continues to grow and expand in its reach and impact. We are pleased to welcome a large group of new enrollees and are excited to help these young men grow this year!

AACPS Mentors: Celebrating the Champions of Change

6/20/24

On Thursday, June 20, 2024, Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) held a celebration that highlighted the positive impact of the one- on-one mentors and various mentoring programs that were facilitated by numerous community partners. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Eta Eta Lambda Chapter was one of those community partners. The celebration took place at The Board of Education, Board Room and was coordinated by Bro. Andre Dillard, who is the Senior Manager of Mentorship Programs, for AACPS.

Bro. Dillard oversees all things mentoring for the school system. Bro. Dr. Mark Bedell, who is the Superintendent for the school system also brought greetings and discussed the importance of mentorship in AACPS.

During the celebrations all the one-on -one mentors, and community partners were acknowledged and presented with a thank you gift bag. The highlight of the event was a video presentation of the mentees talking about the positive impact that their mentors and the various mentoring programs have had on them. There was also a parent who discussed how her son has taken a 180 degree turn for the better because of the mentoring program that he attended every Wednesday during the school year.

Eta Eta Lambda’s Alpha Academy Mentoring Program (AAMP) has been working with young men from AACPS for close to 20 years. AAMP services students from all of Anne Arundel County who are in grades 3-12. Bro. Stephen Williams is the current chairmen for AAMP. In addition to coordinating for the monthly, Saturday sessions, that take place at Annapolis Middle School, Bro. Williams has established a very successful mentoring program at Arundel High School and for the 2024-2025 school year will be leading the charge for a mentoring program at Annapolis High School. The Arundel and Annapolis High school’s programs will be supported by the chapter brothers and coordination with Bro. Dillard and the AACPS Office of Equity.
Several brothers were able to attend the event and spent some time talking with other organizations and mentors. It was a well-attended event that served as the segway into the 2024-2025 school year and Bro. Dillard’s goals for AACPS mentorship initiative for the upcoming school year.

Brothers Participate in March of Dimes - March for Babies

4/28/24

The March of Dimes - March for Babies which was held on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at the Hunt Valley Towne
Centre at 118 Shawan Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030.

The opening ceremony took place at
8:45a featuring our Show Of Hands Ceremony, which was a touching moment. We heard from families
who lost babies, who had premature babies, and families who cannot have children. After we heard from
the speakers, everyone took a moment of silence for those battling with the different situations.

The day of festivities included: Rock painting, stroller decorating, cornhole, music, and fun for the whole
family! We visited our four neighborhoods: CARE, CONNECT, UNITE, and HONOR! We had the
opportunity to pick up your affinity bracelet in one of those areas to share why you are walking. We were also provided water and bananas for the route leisure 1.5 mile walk around the Towne Centre.

The Chapter raised $2,528 for the National Program of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. We were Ranked
42 out of 171 Chapters. We appreciated all the donations that came in because we know it will be going to an amazing cause.

While at the March of Dimes - March for Babies, we hung close with our fellow county sorority organization: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc – Rho Eta Zeta Chapter. We thoroughly enjoyed the time together because we both share March of Dimes - March for Babies as National Programs. For the next March of Dimes - March for Babies, we plan to walk together.

Thank you Bro. Stephen Williams, Bro. Trey Gross, Bro. Khalil Johnson, Bro. Jermaine Wilson & Bro. Eddy
Montero for participating in the walk.

Youth Symposium - Womens History Month

3/11/23

Congratulations to our mentees for completing yet another Alpha Academy Mentoring Session. Our March session was a bit different from our other regular sessions and was open to all parents, young men and women, not just AAMP. We held a Youth Symposium in partnership with the Lambda Delta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. We started our session by celebrating Women's History month, learning the background of the celebration and how it began and our mentees got to hear from a couple of women who have advanced in their industries, talk about Women's History Month and its importance to them. Our Youth Symposium consisted of many fun activities such as learning chess, Barbershop talk for the young men where we have dialogue about real issues/problems/concerns they are dealing with as well as get any questions they may have answered. We also had "Salon Talk - A shop full of sisters" which was the Barbershop talk equivalent for the young ladies. The young ladies also had a "Punch & Paint" workshop where they got to socialize, paint, and have punch and snacks. There were also smaller STEM workshops setup in the gym that the boys and girls could visit at their leisure. We had fun fitness activities and relay activities where the mentees got to pie the mentors in the face. There was a living museum where QR codes were used to make the different exhibits come to life. The AAMP mentees got to continue progress on their pinewood derby cars in preparation for Race Day on May 20th. We even had workshops for the parents that covered various health related topics. We plan to bring the youth symposium back even bigger in 2024!!
