Bro. Dr. Mark Bedell was awarded the 2023 Joseph E. Hill Superintendent of the Year Award
Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell was awarded the 2023 Joseph E. Hill Superintendent of the Year Award on Saturday, December 2, 2023. The award was bestowed by the National Alliance of Black School Educators, or NABSE at their annual conference that was held in New Orleans this year.

The award is presented annually to a sitting superintendent who has demonstrated a quality of leadership that resulted in significant positive outcomes for students of African descent.

Bro. Bedell began his four-year term as superintendent in August 2022 after serving for six years in the same position at Kansas City Public Schools. He arrived with a 100-day entry plan that included a focus on creating what he called a “road map for successful schooling in conjunction with AACPS’ adherence to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future.”
Br. Bedell spearheaded initiatives like #Be Present, which encourages community
members to partner with the school system and be present and active in daily school life. He also shown a particular interest in groups that have historically experienced an achievement gap, including Black, Hispanic, students who receive special education services, and those who are recipients of free and reduced meal lunch.

Over 20 Anne Arundel County Staff members attended the NASBE conference in New Orleans and where able to witness Br. Bedell receive his award in person.
