On September 6, 2025, during our regular chapter meeting, the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. – Eta Eta Lambda Chapter, joined by guests from the Annapolis Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., were honored to host Bro. Dr. Keith Crawford for a virtual presentation on Prostate Cancer Awareness.

Dr. Crawford, Director of Clinical Trials and Education for the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN), shared key insights drawn from his research and clinical work, underscoring why prostate health is an urgent issue—especially for African American men.

Key Takeaways from Dr. Crawford’s Presentation

  • Early Detection – Men in high-risk groups, particularly African American men and those with a family history, should begin regular screenings as early as age 40–45.

  • Awareness of Risk Factors – Age, family history, and lifestyle choices all play a role in prostate health.

  • Healthy Living – A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, maintaining a healthy weight, and regular exercise can help reduce risk.

  • Open Conversation – Breaking the stigma around men’s health by discussing prostate health openly within families and communities is critical.

  • Clinical Trials Matter – Participation in clinical trials helps ensure that Black men are represented in research and that emerging treatments are effective across diverse populations.

  • Know Your Numbers – Understanding PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) levels and discussing results with a healthcare provider is essential for timely intervention.

  • Shared Decision-Making – Screening and treatment options should be chosen in partnership with a trusted physician, taking into account personal and family medical history.

Moving Forward Together

This discussion was powerful and timely during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, reminding us that knowledge and action save lives.

We extend our gratitude to Bro. Dr. Keith Crawford for sharing his expertise and unwavering commitment to Black men’s health.

Brothers, families, and community members—let’s continue to uplift one another by prioritizing our health, encouraging regular screenings, and spreading awareness year-round.
