HHL Remembers Fallen Veterans and Participates in Wreaths Across America 2023

Updated: Aug 12

CROWNSVILLE, MD. On December 16, 2023, the Brothers of the Eta Eta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, participated in the national Wreaths Across America Day to commemorate fallen veterans. Twenty-five Eta Eta Lambda Chapter Brothers laid 500+ wreaths on the graves of our heroes at Crownsville Veteran’s Cemetery. The annual program invites volunteer community members to come out to the cemetery in December to coordinate wreath-laying in ceremonies hosted at thousands of participating locations in all 50 states.

Eta Eta Lambda Chapter Brothers closely identify with the mission of Wreaths Across America which is to Remember the fallen; Honor those who serve; and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. A plurality of our chapter membership are veterans and all seven of the charter brothers of our chapter are veterans.

Coordination for the chapter’s participation in the 2023 event was led by Brothers Michael Askins and Michael Hardman, Sr., both of whom are veterans of the United States Army and whom both served more than 20 years in the armed forces.

The event also served as a catalyst to remember and visit a few of our brothers who entered Omega Chapter and are also buried on the grounds of the Crownsville Veterans Cemetery: Charter Brothers Robert H. Haygood, Sr., Lawrence E. Knight, Jerry H. Luck, and Past President Bro. William Hayes.

Remembering our veterans who answered the call of service to our country in the same way the fraternity and chapter endeavors to be of service to the community is a solemn obligation and privilege. The Eta Eta Lambda Chapter takes seriously this opportunity and is committed to participating in this event each year.
